There are a lot of different video resolutions, file formats, and compresions which affect what specs of computer you will need. If you know what specs you need for the most hardware intensive techniques you will be fully prepared.
h,264 encoded HD DVD and Blu-ray movies are the hardest to play, a rough estimate of specification is the following:
1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo processor. A pretty new graphics card, a ATI Radeon x1000 or Nvidia geforce 7 or 8 will be enough, this should be PCI-Express and have at least 256MB of RAM. Coupled with the latest DVD software you should be all set.
