Top Most Expensive Domains Ever Sold
Aug 20th, 2007 by Martin
Back in the dot com boom it was easy to buy a good domain name as there were loads about, make a good site and flog it on for a lot of money. I’m sure we have all heard of the guy (can’t remember his name) how sold his site for around $5M then after the big dot com crash bought his website back for peanuts!
Those days of making money quickly from buying and selling websites can still be done but it takes a lot more time and not likely to get mega bucks. You can still make money online from buying and selling domains, your not likely to pick up and 4 or 5 letter .coms now as they have all been snapped up. But there are still some good ones to be found, especially from dropped domains, which Pacdesco.net was. Speaking of dropped domains, should I start up doing my dropped domain give away again?
I thought it would be useful doing some research of the most expensive domain names ever sold. I’m sure there are lots of big purchases that go relatively unnoticed, deals done well away from forums and any online media. The purpose being to try emphasize the point of branding, the sites that sell for big money are the ones that are easily brandable.
11 - VIP.com
Sold for a cool $1.4 million in Sept 05
Bought by keisure and gaming, vip.com is a gambling site. I’m not sure how this domain name really relates to gambling but it’s very very easy to remember!
10 - Creditcards.com
$2.75 million in July 04
This site will probably get a lot of direct traffic just from people typing in the URL straight off like most of the other sites on here. The margins in finance/loans can be massive, and have very high cost per click on Google Adwords because of the margins involved.
9 - Wine.com
$2.9 million Sept 99
Only sells to the US market which is a big mistake, and has a very annoying pop up when you go on asking what state your shopping in.
8 - Shop.com
$3.5 million
I don’t think this was really a good buy at all, hands up who’s ever bought anything from here? Not done a very good branding job compared to Amazon, play.com ETC
7 - SEO.com
$5 million 07
Just shows how much SEO has come along and how much money is involved now!
6 - asseenontv.com
$5.1 million Jan 00
Lets you buy stuff that you have seen on TV, a good idea. But was it a good buy? Bought during the dot com boom it’s the only exception to the others because it’s a very long domain name. This dude would lose big money if he sold it on.
5 - Beer.com
$7 million
Bargin, considering the traffic that it will get catering to the main people who currently use the internet.
4 - diamonds.com
$7.5 million
can’t do anybetter domain name wise for what they are selling.
3 - Business.com
$7.5 million in 99
Former Guinness world record holder for the most expensive domain name ever sold.
2 - porn.com
$9.5 million 07
This guy got a bargin!
1 - Sex.com
$11 - 14 million Jan 06
Judging by the top top 2 site I need to get me a porn site going. This will get uber amounts of traffic, plus it would have got a lot of links and traffic just from the hype when it sold.
So what do you think? How does your domain name stack up to these names? Note that they are all .com’s so ideally buy a .com as it’s what people tend to think of after the name. You don’t need a really short multi million dollar domain to succeed as lond as you do a good job of branding what you have got!
http://watch-dogreviews.com (Priceless)
The guy that owns this site is a genius and obviously has done his homework, but I bet it only happened over time. I too follow the same rules and ways he uses to make money online. That’s why I would say that my site you see at he begining of this post would be priceless is because of the amount of time I have put into my website and the little results I have gotten so far. ( I cant imagine what those results are going to be like one year from now) WOW! I would never sell my website ever.
By the way, I love your knowledge and experience and how you willing to express that in your work. (That’s a skill you have surely mastered)
